This Highway Code applies to England, Scotland and Wales. The Highway Code is essential reading for everyone. It contains 307 numbered rules and 9 annexes. Its rules apply to all road users: pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists, as well as motorcyclists and drivers. A complete copy of the Highway Code is available online.
Many of these rules are legal requirements and must be adhered to in order to avoid penalty - fines, penalty points, disqualification or even prison. All road users need to be aware of the new rules. The rules also include a reference to the legislation that creates the offence. The Official Highway Code reflects the most up-to-date legislation that road-users must adhere to, advice on road safety, and best practice. Knowing and applying the rules contained in The Highway Code could significantly reduce road casualties. Cutting the number of deaths and injuries that occur on our roads every day is a responsibility we all share. The Highway Code can help us discharge that responsibility.
