Google SketchUp is a deceptively simple, yet amazingly powerful
tool for creating, viewing, and modifying 3D ideas quickly and
easily. The application was developed to combine the elegance
and spontaneity of pencil sketching with the speed and flexibility
of today’s digital media.
Developed for the conceptual stages of design, this powerful
yet easy-to-learn software allows for quick and easy 3D form
creation. The result is an interface that supports a dynamic, creative exploration of 3D form, material, and light. New features in Google SketchUp include photo match, styles, watermarks, fog, and 3D text.
Photo match provides a way to set up a camera view so that the
modelling environment matches up with a photograph. It can be
used to match an existing model with a background photo, or you
can start from scratch with a photo and then create a 3D model.
A style is simply a saved collection of SketchUp display settings.
With a single click, you can quickly apply a style to any model by
selecting it from the new Styles browser. You can personalize styles
and save them as part of a library, and share them with others.
Watermarks are images placed in the background or foreground
of the drawing area and span the entire area just as sky and
ground. Watermarks can also be used to place logos and other
graphics directly on the screen.
On its Web site, Google offers a set of model libraries to help
you get started with SketchUp. These libraries cover areas such
as architecture, films and stage, and people. Also, check out other
users’ models at sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse
