With ICANN liberating the rules(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the .com era was brought to an end as internet regulators allowed thousands of new domain names This is one of the biggest changes in the internet history which spans over the last 25 years. The new domain names is likely to start roll out by the begining of new year 2009. Under the rules adopted by ICANN today, companies or individuals will be able to register top line domains using pretty much any string of characters. This sounds good in terms of the widespread choice of domain names but the cost ?Well this is going to be one of the costly affair. The application fee will be upwards of $100,000. ICANN is still to come out with a decision to allow or not to allow for .xxx or .sex suffix - this was once cleared and now been withdrawn.
Critics says that this is likely to make the internet more complex and expensive while offering easy pickings for fraudsters and cybersquatters.The new domain name system is likely to replace the current system where the domain name categories fall under 260 geographical or generic names.
