I have been using computer since I was only 3 years of age and at that time I could hardly remember what the hardware computer had. Those were the school days. Later we bought our own computer and it was a 386 with no hard disk, it just had two floppy drives, a 5.4 inch and 3.2inch one, 640KB of RAM and a CGA color monitor. If you don’t know how the CGA monitor looks like, just look any old 14” TV, it was somewhat same. At that time everything was done on DOS and files used to be very small, of few kb’s which can be easily stored in diskettes. Later we found floppies were too unreliable for backups so we installed a 633mb hard disk, it was very pricy at that time and considered a luxury. As the technology advanced, faster processors came up, so the Microsoft was busy making operating system called windows, file size and backup need also increased. The History of Backup - a website which describes all these backup medium history in details has fantastic and really interesting information. Illustrated with diagrams, images and graphs, they have explained every bits and bytes about these storage mediums. Anyone who is interested in computer hardware stuff will find this website very interesting to read; otherwise it’s also a very useful piece of information to know.
