Cardiovascular Disease(CVD) is the term used for strok, and diseases of the heart and blood vessels, which are due to blockages of the blood circulation system.
A blockage of these vessels that supplu blood to the brain will lead to diseases such as strokes and transient ischaemic attacks(TIAs).
In the heart, disease of coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscles leads to narrowing of the arteries, thus compromising the supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle cells.
With a diminished blood supply, the heart muscle cannot function and thus the person will experience angina chest pain and shortness of breath. Initially this may only be felt when the patient exerts himself, but as the narrowing of the coronary artery progresses, the pain will occur even when the patient is at rest.
A total blockage of the artery will lead to the death of the segment of heart muscle that the artery supplies - leading to what is known as myocardial infarction or a ” heart attack”.
