In my opinion, this is a really big scandal. And the biggest problem is that nobody gives a damn about it. You see, I am talking about the possible manipulations in processing votes in case of the elections in the U.S. where so-called “voting machines” are put to use. This time I will not write much about this topic, but I’ll rather post links to the two related articles at the Ars Technica site.
Anyway, the articles mentioned above are the following ones. The first article is titled “How to steal an election by hacking the vote : Page 1”: http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/evoting.ars (note that the article has more than one page, so you need to use “Next” or drop-down menu for further reading) in which there’s also a link to the “How_to_steal_an_election-ArsTechnica.pdf” file: http://arstechnica.com/etc/How_to_steal_an_election-ArsTechnica.pdf (it’s in a pdf file-format), which is a some kind of a summary of the article and it contains descriptions and examples of various methods of vote stealing. All you need is a relatively basic computing/programming knowledge and that’s pretty much all you need to be able to do it. And as in case of all the “front page” articles on Ars Technica site, there is a “[ Discuss ]” link at the bottom which links to the respective thread on the Ars Technica forum.
A copy/paste of the first paragraph:
What if I told you that it would take only one person—one highly motivated, but only moderately skilled bad apple, with either authorized or unauthorized access to the right company’s internal computer network—to steal a statewide election? You might think I was crazy, or alarmist, or just talking about something that’s only a remote, highly theoretical possibility. You also probably would think I was being really over-the-top if I told you that, without sweeping and very costly changes to the American electoral process, this scenario is almost certain to play out at some point in the future in some county or state in America, and that after it happens not only will we not have a clue as to what has taken place, but if we do get suspicious there will be no way to prove anything. You certainly wouldn’t want to believe me, and I don’t blame you.
And here’s also a link to the second article which is titled “Send your elected officials our free PDF guide to hacking the vote”: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061028-8098.html; this one might not be so interesting to non-U.S. readers, since it’s more or less an “red alert” intended for U.S. citizens.
