And today I am posting descriptions of (and links to) few of my favorite text-encrypting programs . Also note that same as in previous/yesterday’s “blog-entry”, all the listed programs are “non-setups”, meaning that they are distributed as a .zip file (or as a single-executable) with no installation procedure required; so you just need to unpack them and execute them …
1. The first program in this “category” is a called LockNote: http://locknote.steganos.com, download it here: http://www.steganos.com/LockNote.exe (and here is also the “project page” at SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote), which saves the encrypted text into an .exe file itself, and thus this makes it “portable”, i.e. there is no need for this program to be residing on other computers, the user just needs a password to see the contents.
2. Then there is yet another program similar to the LockNote one mentioned above; this one is called fSekrit: http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Other/fSekrit, which “generates” portable .exes that contain encrypted text (same as LockNote), however, it is totally smaller in size (i.e. fSekrit’s 39.0 KB compare to LockNote’s 296 KB), and there are few other advantages too.
3. And the last/third one is the Ciphrtxt program: http://www.roadkil.net/ciphrtxt.html (download it here: http://www.roadkil.net/downloads/ciphrtxt.zip), a similar application that is able to encrypt the text of any size, however, this one doesn’t store it in a dedicated file (i.e. the text), but you just need to copy it into the Notepad (for instance) and save it. Then the next time when you need this text, you just need to copy this text back to the Ciphrtxt’s UI and decrypt it with a previously choosen password.
/NOTE: I was referenced to LockNote and fSekrit programs (the first and second programs above) in the Clif Notes Newsletter: http://clifnotes.tk; for the fSekrit in particular in the March 19 issue: http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotesNewsletter060319 of the newsletter. And further, beside the two mentioned programs, there is also a Dariusz Stanislawek’s dsCrypt program: http://freezip.cjb.net/freeware (only 14 KB for the command-line version, and 25 KB for the .exe with GUI), similarly, I was linked to this one in the March 26, 2006 issue: http://freewarewiki.com/ClifNotesNewsletter060326; particularly in the “dsCrypt - good encryption in a small package” entry.
