This “blog-entry” is a logical continuation of the previous “17. My three defragmentation programs (29.08.2006)” programs/software related “blog-entry”: http://www.senserely.com/tayiper-17_my_three_defragmentation… that I posted on the Senserely site just few minutes ago …

And in today’s second “blog-entry”, I will explain how to make the registry as compact as possible, and registry hives and system files defragmented to minimal number of fragments, or in other words contiguous. There are actually two free and “non-setup” programs (only a .zip archive and no installation required) that do this job perfectly, actually they work somehow in cooperation.

1. The first program is called Ntregopt from Larshederer homepage: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de, which optimizes the registry hives. Simply put, it recreates each registry hive “from scratch”, i.e. it removes any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys; therefore you need to run it just before rebooting as opposed to Pagedfrg mentioned below. Note however, that the program does not change the contents of the registry in any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive.

2. Further, I got used to use Ntregopt in cooperation with yet another free “non-setup” application called Pagedfrg: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PageDefrag.html from the Sysinternals site, but this one doesn’t optimize the structure of registry hives, it’s in fact capable of defragmenting them (i.e. the physical files on hard-disk); for more details see my home-site: http://users.volja.net/tayiper, in particular check out the “14.3.2005” entry on the “events1.html page”: http://users.volja.net/tayiper/other/events/2005/events1.htm…. Additionally, the program also defragments the pagefile and Windows EventViewer’s logfiles, i.e. the three files with .evt extension. Also, it is run after the PC boots-up, just before the “pre-logon” screen appears (and after chkdsk finishes checking the disk; of course if it was set to do so), so it is run in a manner, that if I re-structure my registry hives with Ntregopt before rebooting computer, they are defragmented when still being “fresh” on the next boot.

P.S. - And while your are at the Larshederer’s site, also check the Erunt program: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm. It is a program used to backup the registry, while I especially like its sub-program Autoback contained in the same .zip archive as Ntregopt and Erunt; again, for a more detailed description of both programs see the page “events1.html”, the 14.3.2005 entry. Erunt and Autoback are command-line programs and both are very handy to backup the registry on/after boots (I do it with a batch file so that there’s no interaction at all), i.e. I’ve put the shortcut to that batch file into %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ directory so that it backups registry nomather with which account one logs-on.

So untill the next time, Ivan Tadej (user: “tayiper”)
