14. I'm really not sure what I've done ... (28.08.2006)

… so that during the this year’s summer, particularly during the unusually hot months July and August, the temperatures of my mobo and hard-disk were both much higher than before. Well, I actually know what I have done (please, read on) and also now you are probably asking yourselves: “much higher temperatures before what?”. Let me first link you to a thread titled “What have I done so that now the temperature …”: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/77909585/… that I created on Ars Technica forums in regards to this current problem of mine and which describes the “problem” in details.

To make a long story short, it was somehow like that: yesterday when there was a summer-storm outside (and pretty hell of a storm), I shut-down the PC and plugged-out the electric cable. And since this was a rare chance (I normally run my PC 24/7), I also opened the case to clean out the dust. So I cleaned out the fans’ openings etc. successfully and with no obvious problems (I did it by blowing the air “with my mouth” because I don’t have that air-brush thingy), then closed the PC’s casing back, and I was pretty content about it all.

However, after I turned the computer back on (after being shut-down for few hours), the situation was like this:

motherboard: up to 36, 37 C (before never above 32)

processor: somehow same as before

hard-disk: up to 44 C (before almost never above 39)

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I monitor all the temperature readings (for all the components/sensors) with an awesome Motherboard Monitor 5 program: http://mbm.livewiredev.com (or shortly “MBM5”), which I use for more than 4 years now. Unfortunately, it is not developed anymore.

And there was one other strange thing. I put the PC into “stand-by” mode overnight, and when I turn it back on the next day (i.e. that was today), the CPU was also totally hot (like 49 C, while normally it’s around 44 C), then the hard-disk was even hotter (IIRC 45 C or something like that), but the mobo was back on its normal 32 C. But after computer was on for 10 minutes, the processor’s temperature slowly lowered, while motherboard’s was again back up to unusual 36 C. It’s like that “stand-by” motherboard uses the CPU and hard-disk (which I know it doesn’t), but this still doesn’t explain motherboard’s normal temperature.

P.S. - Anyway, today it is a bit better, but it’s still much too hot in any case. And btw., yesterday when I got home (and I left PC on during the time when I was outside), the PC was acting really wierd; namely the shell was not working (drive references etc.), I was getting strange messages (warning popups/windows) and so on. I suspected the too hot hard-disk for that, so I rather shut it down immediately.
