Some consumers and corporations are getting attacked by a worm related to a vulnerability of the Windows OS, according to Oliver Friedrichs, director of Symantec’s security response group.

The impact is not yet measured but it is not as widespread as some cases that have happened. The W32-Randex.GEL, known as Randex, is a worm that tells a system to listen for additional commands over an instant messaging channel to computers afflicted with the Microsoft vulnerability MS06-040, which allows a hacker to install programs, view changes, delete data or create new accounts with full user rights.

The new worm, can be passed by MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messaging, Yahoo Messenger and other instant messaging systems.
