Sharon Stone has had to make abject apologies for her insensitive remarks about China and bad karma - that the China earthquake is the result of China not being nice to the people of Tibet.
She made the remarks at the Cannes Film Festival, saying “all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, is that karma — when you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?”
Her apology, in which she said her “erroneous words and deeds” have “saddened and angered the Chinese people”, has not been well-received. It is seen as not being sincere. People are talking about boycotting her films. Some cinemas have announced they will not show her movies.
Her advertising sponsor, Dior, has also felt the pain. Trying its best to control the damage, Dior China is dropping all the ads and campaigns associated with her. She is particularly well-known for promoting anti-aging skin-care products.
Bad karma for Stone?
