During an early morning attack before dawn on his house, the President of East Timor Jose Ramos-Horta was shot in the stomach by rebel soldiers.
The leader of the rebels, Alfredo Reinado, was killed.
Two cars had driven up to the president’s house and started shooting.
The rebel leader Reinado had escaped from prison and with his followers, hiding in the mountains, had been resisting government attempts to make him surrender.
