Environmental scientist Dr. David Suzuki calls for political leaders who ignore climate change to be sent to jail.
He said politicians should be held accountable for “an intergenerational crime”. In his speech at the McGill Business Conference, he asked for a “legal” way of throwing political leaders into jail, “because what they’re doing is a criminal act”. His remarks were received with rounds of applause.
When questioned later, his spokesman said Dr. Suzuki did not mean what he said literally. Yet it seems this was not a one-off remark, as he had made similar statements in the previous month at the University of Toronto.
Some find it ironic for such remarks to be coming from a former director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
A highly honoured and respected scientist, Dr. Suzuki became a well-known figure to the public through his radio and TV appearances, especially as the host presenter in his TV series The Nature of Things, which has been broadcast world wide.
