People are probably going to argee that I learnt the hard way - and some will say that that is the best way to learn… I don’t know!
My forums use .tpl file as their content, including a header and footer template. My web hosting client, Plesk, doesnt recognise these kinds of files, and so, as a result I had to rename these files to .txt to edit and insert my Adsense tags.
This meant, of course that whilst the I was editing the header.txt file, there was no sch thing as header.tpl, and so all my vistors received an error message and left the site. I calculated later, using Google Analytics (another great tool from Google!!!) that my site lost around 50 visitors whilst I was editing the files, and as a result, probably about $3 worth of clicks.
My conclusion: always set up your site so that it is accessible at all times, even when you are editing it, whether it be by back-up forms of by other means unknown to me at the moment.
