Is Mattel Going Too Far With Their New Barbie?

She Told Me

Apparently, come September, Mattel will be releasing a new Barbie. “Black Canary Barbie” is modeled after a DC Comic super hero, name “Black Canary”. She’ll be wearing fishnets, black boots, black biker gloves, and a black imitation leather looking bikers jacket.

Some Christian protesters feel that this is going too far and consider the new Barbies as wearing clothing that is deemed “sexually suggestive filth”.

To me, I wouldn’t consider the clothing sexually suggestive necessarily. But, I admit that it’s not modest. Still, it’s based on a comic book. If the people who would buy the doll are all ready reading that particular comic book, I don’t see what the issue is - they’re all ready seeing that kind of clothing on a female figure. And, honestly, it’s not only young girls that buy Barbie. There are collectors, and other adults, that would be interested in this particular version of Barbie.

I get that young girls can be impressionable. But, really, it isn’t Mattel’s responsibility to make sure that young girls don’t start dressing like this to “be like Barbie”.
