Have Horror Films Become Too Graphic?

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like horror movies have become too graphic in recent memory. What ever happened to the idea that the audience’s imagination is far more gruesome then anything a film maker can come up with? I agreed with that line of thinking.

It’s great that we can do so many things with technology now, but do we have to show it off at every turn? The eye candy is fun for action movies and the like, as long as it’s backed with a reasonably interesting story line. But, for the horror genre? Let the audience run their imaginations. Let them essentially do the work for you and scare themselves, by keeping the gore to a minimum and not revealing the “monster” far too early.

Sometimes, I feel as though I must be alone in feeling this way, since the film industry seems to keep making movies this way. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not opposed to gore, and it doesn’t bother me to see. But, it actually detracts from the fright aspect of the film for me. And, I love horror movies! So, I want to watch them often. But, where’s the fun in watching them in the first place, if they don’t even scare you a little bit?
