Today, my most reliable hardware appliance firewall cum virtual private network (VPN) equipment died (Good ol’ Fortigate FG60). After all these three year in services, this good one piece of equipment died.
This morning, after I woke around 8 am, I found out my internet connection is disable. I checked my DSL modem (Lucent Cellpipe) and found out that the connection for the internet is still up and blinking.
So I checked out my 3Com switches and found out that it still have a good connection and alive. So I went to checked my trusty firewall appliance. To my suprise, I still saw it have the green color LED statically on but after I tested my connection it still non-operation.
I rebooted my firewall to check if the appliance is hang or else. But after a soft reboot, it still statically stay in that status. I shut off the hardware and replace with my backup Linksys VPN Firewall equipment, after a while my internet connection is up again.
So I taught that this Fortinet FG60 is now defuct and out of sevices. I brought it up to my vendor office by 10 am to checked it out. They say that there have been a electric spike struck my equipment and it’s gone for good. I asked them if they could repaired it and they said to me that the cost to repair it were much more costly that buying a new one.
So based on that, I said to myself, if I want to buy a new one I will have to but the latest version and a good Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) in one package.
So I ordered them the latest version of that particular firewall VPN appliances with two units of 2000 VA UPS for my need. I burned out more than $2000 on this new purchasing. The vendor said to me that it take a week for the equipment to reach my house. So untul then, I have to use my Linksys VPN Firewall for all my firewall services.
Hope that it can reach my house sooner as I can’t wait no longer.
