Free online storage -- A review

box | esnips | gdrive | gspace | online storage

When I was new to internet, if I find anything new or useful like software, icons, music files, or PDFs, I used to open one of email accounts and send it to another email ID and used as a storage medium. Floppies were there but they are limited to 1.4 MB. This was six years ago.

Now the things have changed and there are number of sites that offer free online storage where you can upload your files, arrange it in folders, create a link and share it with your friends. Find some of those, which are of worth to have and I will start with my favorite ones, Box and Esnips. There are lot of free services, but their restrictions make it useless.

Box.net

Box.net offers I GB of free storage. You can upload anything you like. You can create links to the files you want to share with your friends. Multiple uploads are permitted and it is clean, neat, and ad-free.

Esnips
Same as Box, 1 GB free storage for your files. It also offers a toolbar to upload directly to the account. You can search for the files others uploaded and shared with public.

Using Gmail as a free online storage
This is my favorite one too. Gmail is offering 2GB space and it is growing. There is software like Gdrive and Gspace to use your Gmail account as storage medium and you can upload the files into your Gmail. The files will appear as an email with attachment. Main advantage is you can forward that files to your friends with a single click.

If you are using Firefox – use Gspace, a tiny plugin for Firefox to use your Gmail as a free online drive. Read more about Gspace and get it HERE.

If you are an IE user, then use Gdrive shell extension that creates a new drive to your computer and entering Gmail ID and password, you can browse it as a regular drive. You can just copy, paste, and cut the files as you do with other folders.

More about Gdrive and downloading click HERE.

There are some sites that allow you put more than 100 MB files, but will delete them if no activity occurs within a timeframe. Note that above services do not delete any files, but there is limitation of file size.
