Cuil Screen
It is not a first time since era of Google domination begins, when new rivals are trying to challenge the “Big One” leadership. This list might include startups like Teoma (whose technology became the backbone of Ask.com), Vivisimo, Snap, Mahalo and, most recently, Powerset, which was acquired by Microsoft Corp. this month.
However, even after investing heavily on search, both Microsoft and Yahoo Inc. been gradually losing ground to Google. Through May, Google held a 62% share of the U.S. search market followed by Yahoo at 21% and Microsoft at 8.5%, according to comScore Inc.
What makes Cuil different from his predecessors? May be, it is the fact that, for the first time, the competitor’s product is compiled by the former Google employees. May be, it is the overconfident claims that the search engine will ultimately challenge Google market share?
Rather than trying to repeat Google’s approach on ranking the quantity and quality of links to Web sites, Cuil’s technology drills into the actual content of a page, according to the company’s president Anna Patterson. Also, Cuil’s results will be presented in a more magazine-like format instead of just a vertical stack of Web links. Cuil’s results are displayed with more photos spread horizontally across the page and include sidebars that can be clicked on to learn more about topics related to the original search request.
While I tested the new search engine today, the results were quite mixed, with bringing more quality content from Google than from Cuil. Also, Google interface and approach is so familiar through the years together, that it is not easy to be non-judgmental testing another interface approach. Observers also note that some of the well-known pages seem to be not index at Cuil (such as Wikipedia, for example). However, if you take in an account that the site was released just yesterday, the results are quite good. Work is still needed, but it looks promising. Google, beware!

Cuil Search Engine - new Google competitor

There are many AdSense competitors, but so far nobody can come even close to match AdSense. At least for beginner bloggers as I am.
Since they are former Google
Since they are former Google employees, there could be hope if they were to release something..
“Anna Patterson, President and Founder was […] the manager for the core piece of Google’s ad-matching technology.”
“Pete Szymanski, General Counsel […] is also a cofounder of Optimaret, a technology company focused on optimizing auctions for pay-per-click search advertising”
So hopefully they’re eventually going to come up with something… :-)
Cheers,
James

This is actually one of the main reasons why Cuil captured so much attention in the media. The management offered very ambitious claims that they indeed will challenge Google in terms of the amount of indexed sites and the quality of searches. But, the observers are quite sceptical on their real potential. Personally, I did not like interface as well, may be because I am so used to the Google approach, that journal-like GUI does not look attractive to me. Anyway, we’ll see soon, if they have a chance.
I remember Gurunet (now Answers.com), wehen they first entered market, and then when they went IPO. It looked so promising, and I still use them once a while. Where they are now, still waiting when somebody will buy them?

The search engine part is one thing. I’m talking about what fuels Google: ADS, because they’re highly targeted in most cases, they get the best CTR one can expect without hand picking the ads himself.
Cuil NEED to have an adsense program which works acurately, open worldwide unlike the yahoo’s beta joke, and then I’ll be interested and promoting it by using it.
Cheers,
James

Agree with you. But, in order to drive advertisers, they need to make a descent competitive search engine. Actually, there are many companies that specialize exclusively on promotion, so its seems to be independent businesses. However, you need a good, loud, and trusted name to brings ads money in the house.

If they release an adsense
If they release an adsense competitor, including an adsense-search-like then we can talk.
