A case against bariatric surgery

bariatric | gastric | gastric bypass | lap band surgery

While I may be lambasted for saying this, I believe that gastric bypass, or any type of bariatric surgery is a cop out, the cheater’s way, and totally unneccessary. It is for the typical public now that has no self control and no desire to accomplish anything for themselves. I know quite a few people that have had gastric bypass in the past year or two. It has been a success in each case, with all of them losing more than 100 lbs. It is a total life change, and they now eat healthy, and excercise regularly. When asking why they are in the gym, the answer is usually so that they lose more weight.
When asked why they are eating healthy, they say to lose more weight. I wonder then, do these people realize that if they had just eaten healthy and gone to the gym BEFORE the surgery, that they would have the same result. Sure, it might take a bit longer, but look at the benefit, it would be all self control.
I hear tons of arguments of the people that cannot lose weight with normal excercise and diet, due to some kind of thyroid this, genetic that. However, gastric bypass is a success for them. Hmm, if it shrinks your stomach and you can’t keep stuffing your face, it looks like you just ate too much. Its shocking to me that insurance companies will now cover a procedure that is self induced. Then again, they do cover lung cancer for smokers, so it makes some sense.
Weight loss and gain is a scientific principle, but very simple. If you use more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. If you eat nothing but ice cream each day, but limit your calories to less than you use each day, you will lose weight. It might not be the most ideal way to, but it does work. You can eat the most healthy food in the world, but if you don’t do anything physical and eat more than you burn, you will gain weight.
