Alaska Sled Dogs

We live in all parts of Alaska. We are happy, well fed and well trained. Most of us have a small house next to our pole where we are tied.
Some of us that live in the far north at camp are not quite as lucky as some, we stay right on the snow, but our fur is nice and thick and when the snow storm comes we curl right up and sleep right through it. Being from the far north has its advantages, our fur grows thicker and we are accustomed to the cooler tempuratures.

Our owners cook food for us all year around. Most of us, our owners have to go fishing for us to give us the best possible dinners anywhere. Our food consists of salmon, sheefish and other types of fish, mixed with dry dog food. Sometimes if we are on the trail. Frozen fish is cut up and given to us.

We train very hard, some of us join the “Last Great Race on Earth” that is what our owners call it. In order to enter that race, our owners and us must first complete a series of smaller races in order to qualify for the Iditarod. This race is over 1,250 miles long, through all kinds of terrain, ice, snow, thick forests, mountains. During summer months, you must be thinking, there is no snow. We are then hitched up to a 4 wheeler or another such contraption and we take it from there, of course winter time we run on the snow with a small wooden sled that carries our owner behind us. Here are some pictures from a person’s point of view. Enjoy :)

The picture above was when he was saying Whoa! and halted his team to say hello and give a hug. Below is when he took off again.
