I got started in metal detecting in 1971. since then I have found many items including rings, coins, relics, artifacts, old bottles and other interesting things. The thrill lies in the fact that you just never know what will come up out of the ground. It could be a pulltab from a pop can or a diamond ring worth thousands of dollars. Another source of satisfaction is when a neighbor has lost something in their yard and asks you to help them find it, and after a short hunt, you hand it to them. This can be a service to find survey pins to determine property lines thus saving the owner a large expense from a survey crew. When attempting to locate items that are very old, research is often needed for best results. More details on research in another article.
