There are often images or beacons that send call backs to spammers and the nasty thing about this is it indicates to them that they have hit a valid email address and you’ll wind up on a list that they will sell to other spam botches. err I mean bots.
Beacons are used by yahoo as stated in their terms of service. They tell you they DO collect personal information from you.
When you use Yahoo as a means of advertising a product or service, you may wonder how they decide to put your ad in front of somebody’s face while they are surfing through the Yahoo domains when that person has not conducted a search of any kind, but is merely checking their mail or whatever. This is where Yahoo’s beacons come in to play. They see what you’re interested in by collecting personal information from you at their website and they then put an appropriate ad on display for you to see.
When you sign up for Yahoo advertising, you’ll see in the FAQs something similar to “How do you know who to show my ad to when they aren’t searching for my specific product or service”
Hehe, their answer is so off the wall. They call it demographics when really what they mean is, we spy on everyone that is on the yahoo servers and we put ads in their faces based on the URL that they arrived to our servers from and we log their clicks and keystrokes and we figure out what ad would be most appropriate for them.
These are mainly my own opinions, but they are based on facts that I have read. I read too much junk, trust me!
Also, I’d like to mention eBay. They beacon you as well. If you are a buyer and you have chosen a few favorite sellers, the sellers send you emails if you opt in to their mailing list.
eBay allows the sellers to track what goes on in those emails. I won’t blither blather about it, because I’ve said enough on this for now.
