What to look for in a burglar alarm system

What do you want out of a burglar alarm system?

First you want to prevent the burglar from entering the property. The alarm system cannot do this, you must first provide your house with good locks and good strong doors and windows.

The majority of alarm systems are designed to notify you upon entry into the property.

There are perimeter systems such as motion detectors and driveway sensors that can detect the approach of someone near the property, but these are subject to reading if someone simply cuts thru the yard, or turns around in the driveway. You do not want automatic alarms tied to these triggers.

Modern alarms have come a long way in the last few years. The now include indoor motion sensors, fire and some systems also include flood.

Contact and glass break sensors can detect breach of windows and doors.

Many services are available for monitoring by a security site watch your system for trouble. The systems run from $20 to $40 a month or more.

But there are also automatic dialers that can be hooked into most systems that will dial a pre-set pattern of numbers when the system is activated. Such dialers can be set up to call your neighbor, your parents, or any number you want to set in, and send a pre-recorded message. These do not require a monthly fee and are very reasonably priced.

The second thing you want the burglar system to do is to stop the burglar from taking your stuff. This is accomplished with the alarm system horn you choose. You want the alarm to be loud enough to alert the neighbor and make the burglar think twice about sticking around.

The noise should be heard both inside the house and outside. Some systems tell you to use a silent alarm, but if you do, what is to run the burglar off or wake you when the break in occurs.

Next choose the areas of the house you want to cover. Most people place the sensors in the main room of the house, but ignore the garage. You want to cover all areas that control entry into the house. If you have a door from the garage into the house place a sensor in that area too.
