Third-party: Influence comes in
several assorted shapes and sizes, among which you may find your own
children. The predominant third-party influence is
affectionately nicknamed “the attorney.” The attorney is a friend, a
neighbor, a relative who acts as your car shopping and buying spokesman.
According to him, he has all of the answers, knows all about the
automobile industry, is sharper than any salesman (or service manager)
ever born, and can get you the deal of the century.
Naturally, if you get a lousy deal or a lousy car, it will
not be his fault, and no money will come from his pocket bailing you out.
You will find, on occasion, a middle-of-the-road attorney who has good
intentions but just does not know enough to give excellent
advice. What is really important to you is to be able to
recognize the nature of the advice, how it is presented, and the
individual’s motives for helping you. Bird-Dog: A bird-dog
is someone who works with a salesman for a fee (a cut or a kickback) for
whatever business he may bring or refer to him. Naturally, under this
arrangement, the bird-dog’s advice will be biased, for he has a financial
interest in the matter, and you do have to buy for him to collect a
dime.
When you start looking for a car, treat friendly advice lightly,
especially if the friend attempts to steer you toward a certain salesman.
Definitely suspect his motives if he insists on personally introducing you to
the salesman.his friendly mechanic and the car develops problems the
mechanic should have seen originally, the customer will give him the repair
work. Sweet, blind faith.
