** Precaution: **
There have been reports of some dealerships, when they get the keys to
your car for an appraisal, they have held onto them trying to keep you at
the dealership untill they can work you a little about the deal.
The salesman, his sales manager, or a professional appraiser
wants to take your car for ride to check it out. Ask who is
takeing your car to test it, and make a mental note of that persons
name. When they bring your car back from the appraisal, get
the keys and put them in your pocket. There are three major reasons
for this: You want to know when your car is taken off the
lot. Depending on how long your car is off the lot, if it is shopped to a
wholesaler or a used-car lot, you can expect a very low trade
allowance. If the dealer drives it around the block, and
brings it back soon, you can probably bet he plans to keep the car for
resale.
You want to know where your car is finally parked. Some dealers hide the
trade-in or keep the keys to coerce the customer to “go ahead and buy” their
car. If they feel they are not going to get the sale anyway, they have little to
lose by harassing you. It is best to have an expendable set of keys made
before you begin to shop. If someone doesn’t want to return your keys, tell
him to keep them, get in your car, and leave.
