Before you go to the lot you
must realize 6 truisms: 1: Your car is worth only
X number of dollars-period. 2. There are only X number of
dollars of gross profit on a given car. 3. A dealer must
make a profit on each and every car he sells. 4. Do not
expect full retail allowance for the unused portion of recent repairs and
replacement items you have purchased. 5. The dealer does not
care how long ago a replacement or repair was made as long as the parts
are functional now.6. He could care less if there are 33
months left on the battery, 30,000 miles left on the tires, and 20 months
left on the muffler. At best, recent repairs and replacement items will
give you a little negotiating leverage:
If you have done recent repairs you might just
try to mention “My car will sell for you faster; it will cost you less to fix.”
