Be an observer, and give advice
only when it is solicited, or when you see something obviously amiss and
detrimental that your child overlooked. If your child is old
enough to pay, he is old enough to play. Do not assume that
just because you are cosigning for the loan that you will make all final
decisions. You are only cosigning; your child must make all
payments. Why should he work and pay for a car that he does
not like? These days the majority of young people that set
out to a car lot have done some internet searches, and research for the
car they are interested in. If you must discuss the
purchase, do so before you go to the lot. This way you will both be on the
same page. ** Tip: DO NOT: Butt in when you
child is talking to the salesman with your comments, if you must speak,
wait untill the salesman is showing something else and then speak to your
child quietly about your consern. Then let your child ask the salesman the
question. This not only gives your child a chance to look and feel good,
but it might just throw the salesman off his patter and give your child a
chance to make an better deal.
If you insist in doing all the talking,
it will not only make your child feel stupid, but maybe get
him a worse deal, with the salesman thinking they are a push over.
