She Told Me

I decided to write a few words (hehe, it must be more than 50) about a PortableApss suite. This is a collection of, let’s say “Must Have” very useful free or open source applications wich are specially prepared for portable use.

At first, what, infact means Portable App? A definition says that portable app is a kind of computer program which you can carry around you on a portable device (USB flash drive, portable hard drive, etc..) and use on any Windows computer. You have directly access to your software and personal data as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug the device, none of your data is left behind. Also, you don’t need the special hardware or additional software to run that type of application. More about portable app definition and features you can read here.

So, Portable Apps Suite is an collection of portable apps which include: web browser, email client, office suite, calendar, antivirus, backup utility, integrated menu and more. All these applications are preconfigured to work portably. You have three editions of Portable Apps Suite:

Base edition
This is a stripped down package with just PortableApps menu and backup utility. This edition is mainly mentioned for those who’d like to pick and choose exactly application to include into suite. It’s less than 1 Mb and it’s great for small drives.

Standard Edition
Standard edition consists of ClamWin Portable (antivirus), Mozilla Firefox - Portable Edition (web browser), Gaim Portable (instant messaging), OpenOffice.org Portable (office suite), Sudoku Portable (puzzle game), Mozilla Sunbird - Portable Edition (calendar/task manager) and Mozilla Thunderbird - Portable Edition (email client). It has about 90 Mb to download, repacked about 260 Mb and runs comfortably from a 512MB drive.

Lite Edition
Lite Edition uses AbiWord Portable (great write procesor) instead OpenOffice Suite and it has about 30 Mb for download, installed is about 105 Mb and runs comfortably from 256 Mb drive.

More about Portable Apps Suite, download, FAQ and Help you can find here.

It is about 27 applications there, which could run from PortableApps Suite. More to come.

PortableApps is probably one

PortableApps is probably one of the most useful programs I have ever discovered on the Internet. I found it a couple of weeks ago and was amazed that I hadn’t discovered it sooner. The best part about it is that it saves all the settings, bookmarks, even the cookies for Firefox, right on my drive! I love it! They just need to make it work on all browsers and then it will be perfect!
