The History Behind The Name "Blog"

blog | blogging | internet

So, why exactly is it called a “blog”? The simple answer is that it is the shortened form of web log. That never really satisfied me, however, so I did some research into it a while back and found out just where this funny sounding name came from.

I will spare you the repetition of everything I write about in my article The History Behind the Name “Blog”, which describes the history of the name “blog” and where it originated, and let you read it if you want a more detailed explanation. The short answer is, of course, that it is shortened from web log.

Basic history behind the name dates back to 1999 when BradLands.com blamed the origin of “blog” on Peter Mescellany of PeterMe.com, who had said that the proper way to say web-log was “wee-blog”. Mescellany defined the change as: “just being silly, shifting the syllabic break one letter to the left”

I find it very fitting that the term blog should come from a play on words.
