What’s with these new cellular phone models that people are so obsessed about when over the years, it keeps changing? I remember when the first cell phone came out about ten years ago, they looked more like the huge walkie talkie radios used by soldiers stationed in the Vietnam war.
Technology has been so fast paced that the overall size of cell phones became so drastically reduced from the hand held to the sleek palm size. Over time, the design along with the capabilities became more sophisticated as the consumer’s needs started to mature and deviate. Major phone manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung had to keep on adding more extra features just to give you another silly reason to buy their new models every year.
The latest cellular phone now available is somewhat more like a Swiss army knife, a do it all accessory. From the basic call and text features, MP3 music players, still and video cameras, the more pricey and sophisticated models even include personal digital assistant (PDA) functions, Microsoft Windows mobile devices and lately even 3G two way videophone capabilities.
Of course, this continued improvement is good for the consumer since we get more value for our money when buying a new cellular phone. There is one slight disadvantage though. People get so attached to their do it all gadget that they can’t seem to leave home without it. Some people feel incomplete without a cell phone that it’s the most important accessory that they need to carry with them wherever they go.
In fact, it has become such a dangerous attachment, that people wouldn’t want to just part with their phones. There have been many reports of cell phone death robberies wherein the victim refuses to part with their phone in precarious cases of armed robberies. The fact that so many personal information and files are crammed into that one sleek gadget makes it so valuable as life itself that robbery victims often make an effort to resist the theft and unnecessarily die in the process.
So the next time, someone pokes a gun or a knife to forcibly take your phone, don’t resist, give it to them. Anyway, it’s just a phone (PDA, MP3 player, camera, video camera) that gets obsolete. It just isn’t worth dying for. Besides, losing it anyway gives you one more good reason to upgrade to a new and better model.
