It seems no matter what type of writing you do, at some point in time you’re going to get writer’s block. The thing is that it usually comes at the worst possible time, and you’re stuck with a looming deadline or a dying blog. Here are a few ideas on where to find things to write about.
Newspapers–Just pick any story out of your local paper. Don’t just copy the story, tell the story in your own words. Try to find other references on the same story to get a more in-depth line. And don’t just stick with the major stories, discuss a few of the smaller bits of information. You can’t find the needle without digging through the haystack.
Forums and Message Boards–Go find out what the people are talking about. Go past the major issues and focus on the smaller discussions. Look for discussions that start out with a question and use it for the basis of your next article.
Television Commercials–Use this as a way to create interesting reviews. For instance, really pay attention to a specific car ad or kitchen gadget info-mercial. Then, go to the website and really get into the details of the product. Write a compelling review of the product, and use as much detail as possible.
Magazines from the Past–Most libraries carry a wide variety of magazines, and usually keep them around for years. Check out a few of the magazines from the past. Pick up on old stories and see if you can find any more information. Or, do a piece on the differences and similarities of fashion trends through the years. Maybe do a “where are they now” piece on a celebrity from that time.
Whether you consider yourself a freelance writer, of just a casual blogger, you’re going to get writer’s block at some point. You don’t have to allow it to take over, you just need to take a break from the writing and do a little reading.
