Librium is a central nervous system depressant that is used to treat anxiety disorders, alcoholism withdrawal symptoms and anxiety before surgery. Librium is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines and it is very habit forming.

The side effects of Librium include confusion, constipation, drowsiness, fainting, increased or decreased sex drive, liver problems, lack of muscle coordination, minor menstrual irregularities, nausea, skin rash or eruptions, swelling because of fluid retention and yellow eyes and skin.

The side effects caused by the withdrawal of Librium include abdominal and muscle cramps, convulsions, exaggerated feeling of depression, sleeplessness, sweating, tremors and vomiting.

Mixing alcoholic beverages with Librium can increase the depressive effects, create a cross tolerance with alcohol that can increase the possibility of addiction and it can cause a serious fall in blood pressure that can be fatal.

Librium is only used during the first days after a person stops drinking to help the person safely withdraw form the alcohol. Alcohol withdraw symptoms include “the shakes”, hallucinations and changes in blood pressure. Librium is highly addictive and should not be used beyond the first few days.
