The brain works through electrochemical processes. These processes may become impaired by mental illnesses. Electroconvulsive Therapy is believed to work by altering some of these processes. This medical treatment is performed by highly skilled doctors and nurses under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
Electroconvulsive Therapy has a higher success rate than any other form of treatment for depression and other mental illness. It is most useful for those who suffer from psychotic depression or intractable mania, those who can’t take antidepressants because of health problems or because they simply don’t work for them and for pregnant women who have mania or depression. It is also the treatment of choice if someone is set on committing suicide. Antidepressants can take up to three weeks to start working. Electroconvulsive Therapy provides treatment much faster.
The procedure is done by putting electrode pads onto the head. Electricity is delivered to the brain that causes seizure activity. Medicine is given through an intravenous catheter located in the arm or hand to keep the seizure from spreading throughout the body. General Anesthesia is also given through the intravenous catheter. The procedure can be done while hospitalized or on an outpatient basis. It is administered three times a week. The minimum amounts of treatments are three to four. The maximum amount is twelve to fifteen.
The side effects may include headaches, nausea, muscle aches and confusion. Memory loss may occur. It is usually just temporary, but long lasting memory problems can occur.
The effectiveness of Electroconvulsive Therapy in treating mental illness is recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Food and Drug Administration and the US Surgeon General’s Office. It is also recognized by similar organizations in many other countries.
