Sometimes, you find yourself in the situation, when you have to provide your phone number, but, for different reasons, you are reluctant giving away your home number, or your mobile number. And, you still cannot use a bogus one, since it might be in your interests getting a call or message. Until recently, in these, not so rare occasions, I was using Private Phone free services from NetZero, but, unfortunately, the company discontinued its operations. So, now I am on the hunt for the valid replacement.
Why and when I need it (some examples):
1. Making online purchases, I do not want to post my real phone number to decrease a chance of being spammed by phone.
2. Filling the paper sweepstake form, I am not willing to provide my real phone number as well, for the same reason.
3. Multiple personal situations, such as confidential job search, restricted phone access from multiple girlfriends, and so many others, proved the usefulness of additional free phone line in your possession.
The first hit I got in my search is FreeDigits service, offering a free private U.S. phone number, service that includes voicemail, unlimited incoming calls, and, as a bonus, in-network calls between FreeDigits users. Sounds interesting already!
Ok, so what do you get form them:
* Free unlisted US phone number (unfortunately, not a local one).
* Free Voicemail sent to Email.
* Free personalized greetings.
* Free unlimited incoming calls.
* Free in-network calls.

The service got the highest ranking on the list of the VoIP freebies:
