It has been revealed that Pavarotti was faking it in his last performance.
So they decided to pre-record the whole thing in the studio. During the performance Magiera, the maestro, pretended to conduct, Pavarotti mimed the aria, Nessun Dorma, and the orchestra pretended to play.
Magiera disclosed all this in a recent book.

Pavarotti was in deteriorating health. It was not sure that he could sustain a live performance, especially since it was to be an outdoor performance at night in the cold.
They pulled it off brilliantly!
