Ralph Nader wrote an influential book called Unsafe at Any Speed in 1965. That was part of his campaign against the big automobile corporations. He was dealing with automobile safety and his efforts led to a real change for the good.
He has also been outspoken on other safety and health issues. He is an environmental activist, and has strong views against the use of nuclear power.
He is much respected and admired by many “small guys”. But as a mainstream political candidate, he has not fared well. He is even seen as a divisive force. Al Gore’s chances in the 2000 elections were derailed by some votes going to Nader.
No one can predict the future, but a realistic analysis is that Nader stands no chance of winning the U.S. elections.
Why then is he insisting on another bid for the presidency? Many, and especially the Democrats, may feel that Nader is unsafe at any speed.
