Chocolate has been around for a long time. But do you know how long?

Some archaeologists from Cornell University were doing some digging in Central America. They found pottery used for drinking which contained a chemical compound that could only come from the cacao plant.

Cacao is what chocolate comes from.

The pottery is 3,100 years old.

The researchers conclude from the evidence they found that the drink was fermented and was considered to be a valuable commodity. It was only used on special occasions.
