Hi,
I was reading at Matt Cutt’s blog again last night and came across his disclaimer page. There were a lot of comments, mostly bantering and friendly ones, entered about his disclaimer page. His point, of course, is to be a blogger and be able to share his personable side without having Google liable for any stupid comments that he puts, or allows, on his blog. Many great SEO tips can be found at Matt’s blog.
Maybe you do not know who Matt Cutts is, and admittedly, I did not know much either until this past April Fools Day 2007, when a big thread created, on Digital Point, about his blog being hacked, prompted me to read a bit more about him. I made up my mind that weekend that I would, in future years, NOT be on the internet on April 1st to find out any valuable or truthful information. LOL. I felt a certain bond with Matt and his family after I read that he was a graduate of University of Kentucky. :) (Oh! Kentucky) I didn’t graduate from that college, but I live in Kentucky, so there’s the little bond.
Anyhow, I thought about the disclaimer page and decided that it would be an asset to my website if I would go that extra step to create one. For example, I recently received an email from a disappointed site visitor that had sent off for some work at home information from a place called “Fund Raisers”. The visitor of my site did not find this work at home information at my site, but instead, they had bought a work at home “list” from some $29.99 agent. However, I have this list on my site, free of charge, and when the visitor had Googled for information on the company, my site came up in the search results, and he was under the impression I was a promoter for that company. This visitor then emailed me to let me know that the Fund Raisers campaign was BS and he was angry because his money order was returned to him as “No Such Address”.
I replied to my visitor telling him that I was sorry that he felt that he had been scammed and that I was not affiliated with Fund Raisers company, but I was offering the list FREE. I have since removed that listing from the Job Ideas page of my my site, and I am compelled to create a Disclaimer Page that will address the facts regarding certain information on my site. My site is about sharing things that may be useful to others and is no way intended to scam or harm anyone.
I also have a few links on my site that are affiliate links and I try to make a few pennies here and there with referrals to some things that I have tried and tested and am still using. I would like to share a very important fact with you about the approval process when you are applying as a publisher in your affiliate program, e.g.., Commission Junction or Max Bounty, etc. I am talking about your site having a Privacy Policy. Do you collect information on your website about your visitors and share identifiable information with others about your visitors? If you do not have a Privacy Policy in place, it is possible that your visitors may think that you collect, and sell or share, their email addresses, names, phone, and/or mailing addresses. Also, I have been turned down at affiliate sites for the sole reason of my site NOT having a privacy policy. I think we should all make a Terms Page, that lists our disclaimer, terms of use, and a privacy policy, that our site adheres to. I am currently working on this page for my website and will get it linked on the landing page as quickly as possible, then will work on getting it on all of my pages at my website. In the future, I will make sure to always have Terms of Use page on any site that I create. I believe even a simple privacy policy page is better than none at all. I think a good start would be to visit DMA org
