Even when thieves work in concert with an inside source, like a department store cashier, pictures from video surveillance cameras and well trained security officers can catch them in the act.
I was watching video surveillance of a department store cashier accepting a credit card from a customer making a purchase. To anyone not paying attention, this would look like a normal transaction. However, thanks to sharp store security officers, the crime was revealed. What these women were doing was attempting to use stolen credit card numbers to make purchases.
A couple of friends bring their purchase up to the counter where their accomplice is working as a cashier. After ringing up the purchases, the cashier is handed a card with a small post-it note on the back. On this piece of paper are the numbers of several stolen credit cards. The cashier first attempts to scan the card she was given, but it is not accepted. She is prompted to enter the numbers manually. (The card failed because the magnetic strips were partially scraped off causing them to trigger the manual entry prompt). Using the numbers provided on the sticky note, the cashier enters the stolen credit card numbers, the sale is completed and the “shoppers” are on their way with their “purchases.”
Well, that’s how the crime is supposed to be carried out. Unfortunately for this team of criminals the stolen credit cards were declined and the eagle-eyed security personnel were able to catch the actions on video. Upon further investigation, the cashier and one of her accomplices were arrested and the video was even able to capture one of the stolen credit card numbers that were used in the attempt.
Security cameras are not only for department stores and banks. You don’t have to install an expensive cctv system to get peace of mind and security for your home. Inexpensive and easy to install software and systems, like VISEC, are available for homeowners.
