This beautiful shrub was growing in my in-laws’ garden, intertwined with a pomegranate tree, so I snapped some photos and decided to find out more about it. I can be kept busy for ages doing this as these gardens are very lush and bursting with flowers and plants of every color, size and shape!

Thais call this the Peacock Tail Flower or Peacock Flower because of how the petals, pistils and stamens resemble a male peacock strutting his stuff! It is most commonly known in English as Pride of Barbados (the national flower of Barbados) and Red Bird of Paradise among others. The botanical name is Caesalpinia pulcherrima.
This shrub explodes with bunches of these lovely orange and red flowers from it’s deep green foliage! My first impression was that it was like having a shrub full of small fireworks! The small flowers are about an inch or so wide with long flowing stamens and pistils. It goes well growing in with the pomegranate as the colors are a good match for the pomegranate flowers and the red-orange blush of the ripening fruit.
Although this plant originated in the tropical regions of the Americas it grows very well here in Thailand and is popular with Thai gardeners and homeowners.
