In the latest exchange between the two candidates, the inexperienced and quite clueless Obama attempted to call into question John McCain’s support for the military and Senator McCain called Obama out on his total lack of military service.
If Obama were a veteran, I believe he would have understood John McCain’s reasoning behind his issues with the legislation in question.
There should be no doubt in anyones mind that Senator McCain served honorably, he is intimately familiar with military issues and that there is no waiver in his support of the military.
Senator McCain, understands that this bill is short-sighted and the benefits that it increases would only encourage Service Members to serve one term and leave the service. This problem, on the other hand, is not obvious to someone as inexperienced as Obama. As a matter of fact, that type of deal would be appealing to someone like him who never had a thought of serving his country and would see it more of an incentive or “bribe” for doing so. Someone with the character of Obama might consider enlisting with only the intention of doing the least amount of service possible, taking a generous incentive and moving on.
John McCain understands that the military is not like McDonalds and that a constant turnaround can have serious consequences in the readiness and strength and proficiency of our Armed Forces. McCain knows that the current incentives for new enlistees are quite generous and that more attention needs to be paid to those who continue to reenlist and for those who might make the military a career.
This is yet another example of the inexperienced leadership the country could expect from Barack Obama as President. John McCain was absolutlety right for mentioning Obama’s lack of military service as it is the key point in this issue that was raised by Obama himself.
I am a retired veteran and I am not one of those staunch conservatives running around touting the virtues of the Republican party. I’m not 100% happy with any of the candidates, but then again have we ever had a perfect President? I have pretty much decided to vote for McCain, but I think that the key point to that decision was the backing McCain received from former Vice-Presidential candidate and Senator Joe Lieberman and I actually hope to see a McCain-Lieberman ticket on the ballot.
