How Much Does it Cost in Thailand? Tao Rai?

Anyone planning a trip to Thailand? Corporate transfer? Maybe you have considered retiring in Thailand. Wonder how much things cost there?

Besides the greeting “sawatdee” one of the first phrases most people learn is “tao rai” or “how much” when they are out shopping for gifts and souvenirs to bring home.

Here are some examples you can use for comparison when determining how much everyday, or even some “not so everyday,” items cost in Thailand. (conversion from Thai Baht to US Dollars is based on the rates at the time and date of this posting.)

1.5 liter bottle of Pepsi or Coke about 23 Baht or 72 Cents

A carton of 30 eggs on sale for 79 Baht or $2.46 (or about $ .98 per dozen)

Acer Aspire 6920G - Intel Core 2 Duo T9300, 4096 MB, 320GB HDD, Blu Ray drive, 16” Acer Cine Crystal , NVIDIA GeForce 9500M, webcam, Vista Ultimate is advertised for 70,513 Thai Baht or $2,193 USD

Samsung LA-40A450C 40” widescreen HDMI TV on sale for 44,991 Baht or $1,399 USD (This sale also includes FREE with purchase a Samsung CS-21Z45MJ 21” Television listed as a 3,990 Thai Baht value or $124.11 US Dollars)

How about a ROLEX 6622 CELLINI 18K Yellow Gold Watch? (a REAL one!) for 114,999 Baht (on sale) or around $3,577 USD

In the market for a pre-owned luxury car? I saw a 2007 Benz S320 CDI with about 23000 miles, TV/DVD, NIGHTVIEW night vision system and Daimler warranty for 6,980,000 Thai Baht asking price. That’s about $217,000.

Honestly I don’t care about their politicians. I find the fact that they adore their king a very weird thing, but also I don’t care I accept it as it is, even if it is really too much, the thing in the cinema theater where you have to stand up before the small movie of the king, and also at 6PM when everybody stand still when the national hymn is playing. Those are weird things, but the rest is really cool, even the dirtyness of the city is fine with me.

A bit cultlike, yes..

No, I’m not Thai,,Farang here..I don’t find it strange at all. They are a very respectful culture. They respect uniforms, family, their elders and not only monks, but other religious leaders and clerics. They love their king who has done quite a bit for the country. They see him as a simple man, despite his wealth. He is a positive role model. I have no problem paying respects by standing at the theater. I’m sure Thais visiting the US would stand for the national anthem before a Yankees game if they went to see their boy Johnny Damon play!
Now, I’d never want to be put in the awkward position of being in his presence, because I kneel for no one, but I would bow and “wai” respectfully.
