Carpooling has been a practice of many people for many years. The theory behind it is if you agree to drive yourself and a group of co-workers to work on certain days and they agree to do the same, you car, and their cars, get used less and thus, you save money on gasoline and wear and tear. However, although it is true that a carpool can have these benefits, you have to be careful before you decide to enter a carpool because it may end up costing you money. Additionally, because you are carpooling, you are at the mercy of other people’s schedules. Therefore, should they be delayed in getting ready to go to work, you will also be delayed.
Before you decide to participate in a carpool, it is important to know where everybody lives in relation to your house and your place of employment. A carpool does not make sense if you have to drive across town to get somebody only to have to drive all the way back to go to work or to pick up another carpool participant. Therefore, make sure that you chart a course and analyze whether it makes sense to be in a carpool with that particular group of people. You only want to be in a carpool with people that are in your general neighborhood and that can be picked up on the way to work.
Time is an important consideration to analyze before deciding to participate in a carpool. You have to be concerned about your time schedule and the time schedule of the participants in your carpool. For example, if you participate in a carpool, you have to leave earlier for work than you ordinarily would because you have stops to make and people to pick up. Additionally, you have to consider the order in which you pick people up. For example, if you are being picked up one day and you are first, you again have to ready to go earlier because your house is the first stop.
A big problem that carpoolers run into is when one participant of the carpool is running late. This can effectively make everybody else late if the carpool waits for this participant. As such, when getting into a carpool, not only do you have to take into consideration the location of the other participants, but you also have to consider the punctuality of such participants. If all of the participants of the carpool are punctual, then you probably have nothing about which to worry. However, should one participant not be the most punctual person, you have to analyze whether it is worth it to join or remain in the carpool, as the case may be.
There is monetary value to participating in a carpool. However, if the location of the participants and the punctuality of the participants are or become a problem, you should probably not participate in such a carpool.
