Essential Soccer Equipment

Soccer is a great sport. I have been playing since I was five years old. It is a great sport because it teaches team play, requires a lot of stamina, and is an action packed, strategic game. If you are thinking of playing the sport or are thinking of singing your child up for soccer (I applaud you if you are doing either), you have to purchase certain gear so that you can be able to play the game competitively and safely. With the exception of the cleats (even though they can be expensive, you can pick up a functional pair for around $40), most soccer gear is relatively inexpensive.

You need some essential gear in order to play soccer. Such gear includes cleats, shin guards, socks, shorts, a soccer ball, and a goal. If you are a goal keeper, you may want to purchase a pair of keeper gloves in order to protect your hands from shots.

The cleats are the most important. You have to buy a comfortable pair that is flexible and lightweight. Soccer cleats can be made out of many different types of leather. Some leathers are softer, more durable, and more flexible. Other leathers are tougher and durable, but not so flexible. The tougher leather cleats are less expensive and do take a little longer to break in, but if you are on a budget, you can still pick up a good pair for less money. In addition to the leather, you have to be concerned about the studs in the cleat. If you live in a predominantly wet and rainy climate, there are soccer cleats that are made specifically for this type of condition. If you live in a predominantly dry climate, there are soccer cleats for that type of condition. It is important to note that dry weather cleats do not work well in wet weather conditions and wet weather cleats do not work well in dry weather conditions. Therefore, do not buy the wrong type of cleats.

Shin guards are very important because your shins will get mauled in almost every game. Soccer is played with the feet, and therefore, because your shins are near your feet, they will take a pounding. As such, you have to protect them. Shin guards are relatively inexpensive and thus, you can pick up a quality pair without breaking the bank.

In regard to the shorts, any pair of soccer shorts will do. Just make sure that the shorts are lose and do not stick to your skin when they get wet. In regard to the socks, make sure they are long enough to completely cover your shin guards. Other than that, plain cotton socks will do the trick.

Unless you are in a competitive league, the soccer ball you use does not have to be anything special. However, you should definitely avoid the stereotypical black and white colored ball with glued panels. These balls are so cheaply made that they will fall apart in a week after continuous use. Therefore, always opt for the hand stitched balls. These balls last longer and perform better when in play.

As for the goal, this should not cost you any money because any two posts can operate as a goal. In fact, if you are on a playground, setting up a couple of those metal trashcans to serve as goal posts will do the job. Just remember to put the trashcans back when you are done.

This is everything you need to play soccer. As such, get your gear, call some friends, and play some soccer.
