As the elections of 2007 draw closer , and as obasanjo prepares to hand over power to a new democratic government . I think its only fitting that we evaluate what has been our longest serving democractic government so far.
In this piece,We will look at what has been done to improve the living conditions of the average nigerian and what more needs to be done to improve living conditions.
On assumption of office. One of the major problems facing obasanjos government was a moribound power sector that was on the verge of collapse. Following years and years of despotic , corrupt military rule with very little in investmentinto the power sector , the power sector was quite literally broken.
With a meagre installed capacity of 5000mw and with only 1500 mw being feed into the system and a population of 140 million , nigeria was probably the most underpowered nation in world. and this despite the fact that nigeria possesed huge gas and coal reserves. Manufacturers who had not shut down were forced to turn to the use of Generators to power operations. This measure of course lead to the an increase in prices of basically every household item.Long suffering Small business like hair dressers and barbers and local stores had to regularly hustle to acquire fuel for their little generators.
