The south-western Chinese province of Sichuan has been devastated by one of the most powerful earthquakes in decades.

12,000 people have died, and the death toll is certain to rise. Many more thousands are buried under rubble.

The 7.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in far away places like Bangkok and even Hong Kong. After striking on Monday afternoon, strong aftershocks followed.

Many school children were struck down as their school buildings collapsed on them.

It has been revealed that Pavarotti was faking it in his last performance. That was at the opening of the Turin Olympics ceremony in 2006.

Pavarotti was in deteriorating health. It was not sure that he could sustain a live performance, especially since it was to be an outdoor performance at night in the cold.

So they decided to pre-record the whole thing in the studio. During the performance Magiera, the maestro, pretended to conduct, Pavarotti mimed the aria, Nessun Dorma, and the orchestra pretended to play.

Magiera disclosed all this in a recent book.

Charlton Heston was to many movie-goers the image of Moses, from his role in The Ten Commandments. That movie is also regularly shown on television, especially during the religious holidays, and that image is also implanted in the wider public mind.

Heston was a movie icon. His strong features and rugged build suited him for many heroic roles in and around the 60’s - including Ben-Hur and El Cid. Few other actors would have played these roles as effectively.

People have been too hasty in judging Hillary Clinton’s misspoken words about being under sniper fire when she arrived in Bosnia, as she described in such vivid and memorable detail in her speech recently.

How could she forget such a dramatic event - what could have motivated her to make up a story when the truth can so easily be found out?

Well it seems these rash people should look at the real evidence, before jumping to baseless conclusions.

And what more proof do people need than to see actual footage of her trip. This is a complete vindication.

The TV comedy series “How I Met Your Mother” was watched by 10.6 million viewers because of Britney Spears’ appearance in one episode as a doctor’s receptionist. This was quite a boost from its average 7.8 million viewers.

Spears appeared in good form, looking more like her former self. Viewers also reportedly liked her acting. She herself said it was terrific to work on the show.

Her recent emotional and family troubles are more than what any average person can take, and there is hope we will see a Britney Spears recovered and made stronger for all that.

The recent speech of Hillary Clinton makes one ask whether she is having problems. She gave a highly descriptive account of how she landed in Bosnia some years ago under sniper fire, so that the greeting ceremony had to be bypassed, and she and her party were rushed into waiting cars.

None of that was true. This was later whitewashed as her having “misspoken”. Did she misspeak one or two words or sentences? It seems not appropriate to talk about “misspeaking” an entire event.

She affirms that she is an active Obama supporter, and denounces the tactics used in the ad.

Hillary Clinton needs all the help she can get, but she should be sure she is enlisting people who are really supporting her.

After the death of his first wife, a somewhat sorry-looking and distraught Paul McCartney seemed to have rebuilt himself when he married Heather Mills in 2002. The marriage was short-lived. They separated after four years. A daughter, now four years old, was born during the marriage. Mills asked for £125 million ($252 million) in the divorce settlement. She was awarded £24.3 million (the equivalent of $48.9 million), which includes her £7.8 million ($15.7 million) in assets.

The spotlight has now turned on Ashley Dupre, the girl known as Kristen, who figured so prominently as the mystery call girl in the downfall of the governor Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer has fallen from grace, from his lofty heights. But it may well be the Ashley Dupre is just starting to be a rising star though in infamous circumstances.

Shocking though it may be, a man in high position taken down by his own weakness and foibles is sad and tragic news, but history is strewn with such incidents.
