Birthdays, birthdays coming too fast these days…

When you get to my age birthdays come a little too quickly. One closer to the last, perhaps?

I used to go out and celebrate, then later it was a family occasion to be shared with my wife and children.

Now its usually my favourite dish and the anticipated visit from some of my grandchildren, though one of our grandchildren has lived with us for many years, himself.

Even birthdays celebrations for the grandchildren have had to be re-organised as they have continued to increase - eleven with another well on the way.

The new ECO light bulbs contain mercury - they cannot be safe...

| | | |

Which are safer, the old or the new light bulbs? The NZ Government wants to ban the old ones, but it has just been reported that the new ECO bulbs contain mercury and should be handled carefully if broken - don’t vacuum up the pieces - use cellotape or a damp cloth to collect the pieces and put them in a box and dispose of them at a recycling centre.

I have been down to the supermarket and bought more of the old bulbs and disposed of the new ECO bulbs. Safety comes before electricity savings!

“12 million bees on the run”…

Ugly scenes as 12 million bees escape after California crash

It must have been a driver’s worst nightmare - cruising down the highway and suddenly running smack into millions of angry swarming bees.

The bees were on the loose in California after a truck in which they were being transported flipped on its side on the highway.

The California Highway Patrol said eight to 12 million of the honey bees escaped from the crates in which they were stored.

The truck was carrying over 400 beehives with 30,000 bees in each.

The New Zealand Prime Minister, Helen Clark, has issued an apology on behalf of the Crown to New Zealand’s Vietnam War veterans for the despicable treatment metered out to the them when returning home, and the years of ignoring claims of ill health and death caused by exposure to Agent Orange and other chemical sprays used in Vietnam - an apology for the history of pain and suffering by their members of their families too. Effects being felt by their children, and now some of their grandchildren.

THE VATICAN SAYS IT’S OKAY TO BELIEVE IN ALIENS…

The Vatican’s chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God.

The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.

In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion “doesn’t contradict our faith” because aliens would still be God’s creatures.

From conquest to commerce…

First publishe a Qassia:

During its heyday the Yuan dynasty, founded by Kublai Khan, fostered trade and travel, leading to what has been termed “the greatest expansion of commerce in Eurasian history.” This was the era of the great Venetian traveller, Marco Polo(1254-1324). Travelling overland or by ship, Arabian, Persian, Indian, and European traders took with them horses, carpets, gems, and spices, which they exchanged for ceramics, lacquerware, and silk.

CSI actor charged with drug offences…

Actor Gary Dourdan, who plays a forensics investigator on the hit TV show CSI: Crime Scene, has been charged with possession of heroin, cocaine and ectasy. The charges arose from his arrest on April 28 2008 in the desert city of Palm Springs.

Police had found him asleep in the driver’s seat of a car just before dawn. A search of the car found the various drugs and drug paraphernalia.

How many times did the character he portrayed on the TV show, find drugs in the possession of other characters on the show, I wonder?
