Politics at work

This is a typical story at work usually happen when you are assigned in Human Resource Deparment.

HR is again in the spotlight. It’s a wonder why HR is so popular? Why some people in the Company are in some kind of campaign to put HR people down? What’s in HR?

HR computers were checked due to some confidential file circulated at QA Department. We were insulted and feel betrayed. The people whom I thought support us seem to be those who are also trying to put us down. We were not given the benefit of the doubt. They could not wait till the next day to ask us about it. The manager called me, in all fairness, perhaps he was also feeling the way I felt, to tell me what happened. They had violated our right to privacy. Well, maybe they do not know the meaning of the word…

I was angry, but I also realized we are not guilty of anything. It was an honest mistake.

On March 10, just a few days after the checking of HR computers, the Head talked to me and my staff named Lea. Another report reached the Master’s office. Lea was late she made the mistake of not swiping in the log box in the morning of March 7, however when the log box was checked she had logged in at 0744. It was dishonesty in the company rules and regulations and it was again reported directly to the Master. The Master was very angry. It was a shamed but I was not angry at Lea. I was sad that she made that mistake but I had confirmed that something is going on. I’m not sure what it is but I’m certain of it, unfortunately along the way people below are being hit, especially HR people. The Master because he was very angry, well, can you imagine in just a matter of days HR people proved to him of their inefficiencies and they are not trustworthy. Decision was made. Lea is to be terminated including Monica if proven that she encoded the logged in of lea. Fortunately, logs were encoded based on the log sheet. Monica had no knowledge of the incident.

Lea’s violation should have been addressed systematically. There is a procedure and process but it was not followed. Perhaps the process should be abolished and every violation committed shall be reported directly to the Master. Now what do we need HR for? What do we need HR Manager for? So the company can save a lot because there is no need for HR Manager. All it needs is a clerk or typist who will type the memorandum. Well, there is the Master’s Secretary so there is no need for a typist either.

I can’t help but wonder what if it’s somebody from QA or QI or Press or from EDP or from Finance? Would they report it directly to the Master as well? All things considered I think we deserve some fair treatment but perhaps to them we are just a HR people we do not matter so they can easily step on us.

Lea is due for termination. Decision have been made due process is just a formality. Was it a fair decision? Hmm, whether it’s fair or not is immaterial now. Lea decided to resign. And I am deeply hurt. I know lea has plans of leaving the company but she was treated unfairly. She was not given a fair trial before a decision was made. Reporting the incident directly to the Master was not fair from the beginning. If she was given the due process it would have come out that it was not a big violation as it was an excuse late. She could have been given a lesser penalty.

Why do I think that there is some kind of campaign to put HR down? Simple, first when the so called confidential file was seen it was automatically emailed to the Master’s office. Then the March 7 incident, they waited until the Master’s came back from his trip to personally inform him. From March 7 to 9 they have plenty of time to inform the head of HR of what Lea did but, no they have to wait to the Master. If it’s not some kind of agenda to bring us down then I don’t understand what it is they want.

We were told that it was informed directly to the Master because they want to correct HRD. They are so good that it became their responsibility to correct everyone’s mistake. And they are so busy that they still find time to open HR files. They want to correct HR? Then why does the company is experiencing a huge QUALITY problem? They have time to correct HR but they lack the time to correct the quality of their jobs.

I’ve got this impression from somebody that it’s like HR is retaliating. Funny, isn’t it? They’re thinking that the memo issued to the two employees who circulated the files is some kind of retaliation? Ha Ha Ha amazing how their minds work. Here they are doing everything to bring down HR and yet they are afraid of what the small people can do to them.

Now I am asking myself. Is it worth the battle? Right now all I can think of is to get away from these pathetic people. These people are very unprofessional. They strike behind and if you’re not aware you might get hit and will get hurt badly.

HR people are employees too trying to earn an honest living. Like the employees in other departments we deserve fair treatment and respect as individual.

We are not perfect, who is? We make mistakes, who is not? But we are judged as if we are bad people. If it’s other employees they can have the proper procedure but for us HR we have to be reported directly to the Managing Director.

Somebody told me that these things are happening because people below do not trust HR anymore. That’s very unfair. I am challenging anybody to come up and tell us they don’t trust HR and tell us the reason. And I am challenging anybody to say that his or her work is perfect. Has anybody ever admitted to themselves that the salary they received is lacking due to their inefficiency? Has anybody admitted that he was not paid overtime because he failed to submit his OT request? Nobody will admit that because it is okay to blame HR for their lack of discipline. It is already a nature here to put the blame on other people for their inefficiencies. And because we are HR it is okay for them to always put the blame on us.

Employees will whine whether the salary is exact or not because that’s human nature. Only some officers in the company are like politicians who will surely take it to themselves to make a big issue of a small thing to brag their authority.

I just hope that these people will not fall down in their campaign…if they do…well, I will be there to help them get up.
